The first thing after installing WordPress on your website, you would like to know how to install WordPress plugins. Here, you will learn it in just a few easy steps.

Plugins are small software that provides extra functionality to your website such as Social sharing, Contact form, Views counter, etc.

There are more than thousands of free or paid plugins are available on WordPress. Here I will show you how to install it easily.

There are mainly 3 ways of installing a plugin on your website:

  • Install a plugin from WordPress plugins list
  • Upload a plugin manually through WordPress
  • Install a plugin via FTP

If you have installed WordPress.com on your website, then you can not install a plugin for free. Free installation of WordPress plugins is available on wordpress.org only. You need to upgrade to the business plan. That’s why I recommend you go for a self-hosted platform to start a blog. However, To learn how to move from wordpress.com to wordpress.org.

Install a plugin from WordPress plugins list

It is the easiest way to install WordPress plugins on your website. You can install a plugin in the following steps.

  • step 1: Go to the plugins Area on your WordPress dashboard
  • Step 2: Click on Add New
  • Step 3: find a plugin from the list or search for a plugin
  • step 4: Click on ‘Install Now’
  • Step 5: Click on ‘Activate’

When you go to the WordPress dashboard, then you should see on the left side, a few options are there such as Posts, Media, Pages, etc. you will also have an option of ‘Plugins’ so just move your cursor there or click on it.

Step 2: Click on Add New

As soon as you take your cursor on plugins or you click on it, you will see three options.

1. Installed plugins– where all the previously installed plugins are there.

2. Add New– where you can add a new plugin

3. Plugin Editor– where you can edit or modify existing plugin.

Click on ‘Add New’ either in the left bar option or on the top of the plugins dashboard to add a new plugin.

Step 3: find a plugin from the list or search for a plugin

After clicking on the ‘Add New’ button, you should get an interface where all the plugins are displayed, and also you will have a search option to search for a plugin.

You can see several tabs are there at the top that will let you switch the list of the available plugins. Let’s discuss these tabs:

Featured tab

Featured tab consists of plugins recommended by wordpress.org. There is an option available at the bottom to search for a plugin.

Popular tab

In this tab, The entire list of plugins are sorted by popularity. There are more than 50000 of plugins are available.

Recommended tab

This tab shows you recommended plugins based on previously installed plugins.

Favorite tab

This tab shows you the plugins you have marked as favorite on WordPress.org

You have learned the basics of all tabs. Either you can choose a plugin from these tabs or you can search for a plugin in the search box.

step 4: Click on ‘Install Now’

Either You should see a button ‘Install Now’ on each plugin or As soon as you search for a plugin in the search box, it appears with a button ‘Install Now’ if plugins match the criteria. Click on the ‘Install Now’ to install it.

One thing I suggest, before you install a plugin, click on ‘More Details’ below of the ‘Install Now’ button. Read the description of the plugin and check whether it is required for you or not. And also check active installation. Having more active installation of a plugin increases the trust.

Step 5: Click on ‘Activate’

As soon as the installation process finishes, you should see the ‘Activate’ button. If you see means you have installed a plugin successfully. To make a plugin to function all its features, you should activate it. So click on the ‘Activate’ button.

Once you clicked on the ‘Activate’ button, wait for a few seconds. As soon as the activation finishes, WordPress will redirect you to the list of all plugins where you can update, delete, and even edit the plugin.

The plugin is installed and activated successfully. To start working with it, you should go to the setting and set it up. Since every plugin have different feature so I am not able to tell you exactly how can you set it up.

Upload a plugin manually through WordPress dashboard

Some plugins may not be found in the WordPress plugins list but can be found on the web page either free or paid. So, those plugins can not be installed directly from WordPress. You will have to upload it manually.

Plugins usually come in .zip format and WordPress allows you to upload a plugin in .zip format only. So, you do not need to extract it. If you have downloaded the plugins in .zip format then follow the steps to upload it manually.

  • Step 1: Go to the location Plugins> Add New
  • Step 2: Click on ‘Upload Plugin’
  • Step 3. Click on ‘ Choose File’
  • Step 4: Select plugin file from your computer in .zip format
  • Step 5: Click on ‘Install Now’
  • Step 6: Click on ‘Activate Plugin’

In the WordPress dashboard, Go to the location, Plugins> Add New, where you can see the list of plugins available on WordPress.

Step 2: Click on ‘Upload Plugin’

After clicking on ‘Add New’, you should see a button ‘Upload Plugin’. Now you can upload a plugin which you have downloaded from outside. Click on ‘Upload Plugin’ button.

Step 3. Click on ‘ Choose File’

After clicking on ‘Upload Plugin’, You should see ‘Choose File’ button. You have to select a plugin file from your computer. Make sure the plugin file is in .zip format. Click on ‘Choose File’ to import plugin file.

Step 4: Select plugin file from your computer in .zip format

After clicking on the “Choose File” button, computer directories and files will open. You should go to the location where your plugin file is available. select the file and click on ‘Open’.

Step 5: Click on ‘Install Now’

After selecting the file, you should be able to see your file name, and also, you should see the ‘Install Now’ button has been highlighted. So, now click on the ‘Install Now’ button and wait for few seconds until the installation process finishes.

Step 6: Click on ‘Activate Plugin’

As soon as the installation process finishes, You will be redirected to the plugin page where you have to activate the plugin. You should see an ‘Activate Plugin’ button. Click on it to activate the plugin.

After clicking on ‘Activate Plugin’, wait for a few seconds, you will be redirected to the installed plugin page when the activation process finishes. Now you have successfully installed and activated the plugin. You can update, deactivate, delete, and modify the plugin according to your requirement.

Install a plugin via FTP

This is for advanced users who know the file transfer protocol. WordPress allows you to install a plugin via FTP. You need to upload a file on the server, and then you can activate it through the admin panel. Follow the steps to install a plugin FTP.

  • Download and install any FTP client such that FileZilla, etc
  • Connect your application with FTP server
  • Navigate to WordPress folder that usually found in the “public_html” or “www” folder.
  • Open plugins folder
  • Unzip your plugin file there
  • Login to WordPress dashboard and go Plugins> Installed Plugins
  • Find the plugin you uploaded
  • Activate it by clicking on ‘Activate’ button

Conclusion

The first two methods are very easy and beginner-friendly. You can install a plugin very easily from these ways but the third method requires basic knowledge of File transfer protocol (FTP). However, In all the methods, you should have a plugin in Plugin list where you can activate, deactivate and delete the plugin.
