A permalink is a unique address or URL to an individual post or page that should not be changed once the page is published. It is also known as Permanent Link.
A permalink is made by your domain name plus slug. Slug is a part of the full URL to an individual post or page. It may include date, time, title, and whatever you want.
Example of permalinks: My homepage URL is https://siteguideforyou.com/ and the URL of this post is https://siteguideforyou.com/permalink-guide. So this post URL is called as permalink. Words used after the domain is slug i.e permalink-guide.
I hope you understood what is a permalink. Let’s look on making it SEO friendly.
A permalink plays an important role in Search Engine Optimization. Here I would like to guide you on how to make it SEO-Friendly.
To make a permalink SEO-Friendly, you should follow these points:
- Easy to remember
- should not be longer than 75 characters
- tells the search engines what is your post about.
- Better not to have conjunctions and prepositions
- Include keywords from your post title
- words should be separated by dashes
- every character should be a small letter
- starts with https
Easy to remember
You should always use the words in your permalink that are easy to remember. To do so, use popular keywords that usually are used in all the way. For example, suppose your post is about how to start food blogging, then you can have a permalink like www.example.com/food-blogging/.
Including difficult words in your permalink may not generate clicks on your posts because readers may not understand the intent of your post.
should not be longer than 75 characters
It is an important part of making permalink SEO-Friendly. Your permalink should be always less than 75 characters. If the number of characters is more than 75 in your permalink, then the full URL will not appear in the search engine result page. So, make sure it does not exceed the limit. Look at this URL,
You can see here, the full URL doesn’t appear in the result page, so a reader can not sense the exact topic of this post from this URL. So make sure you don’t do the same.
Tells to search engines what is your post about.
Your permalink should be easy for search engines to make quick sense of. So, you should use the word which is the main topic of your post. Look at this post’s permalink, I have written this article to guide the people about permalink, so its URL is www.siteguideforyou.com/permalink-guide/. It’s very clear from permalink what I am going to talk about in this post.
Better not to have conjunctions and prepositions
As I have discussed above, A permalink should be easy to remember, and also easier to search engines to make quick sense of. This point helps in ensuring both of those problems.
Remove conjunctions for, and, nor, but, or, yet and so, and also prepositions to, of, with, at, from, into, for, on by, and so on from your permalink to make a permalink SEO-Friendly and use easy words.
For example, Suppose your post is about how to redirect a link to another link, then you can have slug as ‘link-redirection’ instead of ‘how-to-redirect-a-link’ or something like that.
Take another example, Suppose your post is about what is a permalink, then instead of using what-is-a-permalink, you should use what-is-permalink.
It is better to have key phrase or some crucial words like how, why, what, etc in the permalink that clearly indicates the nature of what is your content about.
Include keywords from your post title
This point will help you to index fast and rank soon in the google. You should always use the main keywords in the permalink from your post title.
For example, Suppose your post title is how to get youtube subscribers. So here, main keywords are “how”, “get”, “youtube”, “subscribers” then you can make a slug, like get-youtube-subscribers or how-get-youtube-subscribers. you should not use the words other than your post title like increase-youtube-subscriber.
Also, the keywords used in the permalink should be there in the post content multiple times. It helps google crawlers to ensure that you are talking about the same.
words should be separated by dashes
Any words you include in permalink should be separated by dashes, not any other character. Few people use dot or slash but that is not good from an SEO point of view.
For example: Suppose if your post title is “become a YouTuber” then you may want to include words “become” and “Youtuber” in your post’s permalink then your permalink should be
www.example.com/become-youtuber instead of
Every character should be a small letter
You should always use a small letter for creating permalinks. Including capital letters in your permalink is not good from an SEO point of view. Even the first letter of words should also be small only.
For example: Suppose if your post title is “become a digital marketer” then you may want to include words “become”, “digital” and “marketer” in your post’s permalink then your permalink should be
starts with https
https indicates that your website is secure, and any information between the server and web browsers is exchanged in encrypted form. Search engines or the users trust, if the URL starts with https.
For example: your permalink should look like,
If you do not know how to change, modify, or customize your permalink in WordPress, then read this, I have explained it in a very easy way. I hope you will get it.
First of all, you should remove the date and time to appear in your permalink from the setting. For example, your permalink should not be like www.example.com/09/02/2020/post-name from the SEO point of view. You should always have a permalink like www.example.com/post-name.
You can remove through the location
Setting>Permalinks in WordPress.
After going to this location, you should see custom setting of your permalink where you can change it as you want.
Set your permalink as /%postname%/ and then permalink will be changed to www.example.com/postname/.
But still, this will include your whole post name. For example, Suppose your post title is “how to increase YouTube subscribers in a few days”, then the automatically permalink will be generated as www.example.com/how-to-increase-youtube-subscribers-in-a-few-days which is not good and too long. So you should change it manually from the setting inside the post editor.
To change permalink, Click on the setting icon at the right side, then on Document and you will be able to Permalink section where you can edit your URL slug.
As you can see, there you can edit the URL slug in the post editor itself.
You should have either of plugins Yoast SEO and RankMath to optimize your content and for SEO. If you have either of these plugins, then you do not need to change permalink from the WordPress setting. It offers to modify permalink in the content itself. I recommend you to use either of them.
A permalink should not be changed except in extreme exceptions because any incoming links the post or page has from the same website or another website will start pointing suddenly to a missing URL. It increases the bounce rate of your website and may affect ranking.
If you need to change a permalink you must set a 301 redirection that tells the search engines like google that the post or page has moved to a different URL. You can use Post redirect plugin to set up a proper 301 redirection.
You usually want to increase authority and get traffic on your website, and hence you create Backlinks. Backlinks are nothing but incoming links to your post, page, or domain from other websites.
So, if you have created backlinks or someone has put your post’s link into their website, and you changed your blog post’s URL, then those links will point to a 404 error page. Search engines will notice that and will decrease your ranking. If you have multiple broken links on your website, then search engines may penalize your website.
A permalink is a unique URL to an individual post or page. It should never be changed except in extreme case. You should make your permalink SEO-Friendly. Use SEO plugin to set permalink accordingly. If you are changing permalink then you must set up 301 redirect.
